President Muhammadu Buhari has joined other world leaders in congratulating the United States President-elect Donald Trump on his victory in the country’s election.

At the same time, the Nigerian leader offered his hand of fellowship to the new US helmsman who will succeed Barack Obama in January.

President Buhari also congratulated American citizens on the outcome of the election, which was keenly observed by all true lovers of democracy and those who believe in the will of the people.

In a statement by Femi Adesina, his special adviser on media and publicity, President Buhari also said he looked forward to work together with Trump to strengthen the already established friendly relations between both countries.

The cooperation will include many shared foreign policy priorities, such as the fight against terrorism, peace and security, economic growth, democracy and good governance.

Buhari extended his good wishes to Trump on the onerous task of leading the world’s strongest economy.

Meanwhile some residents of Ilorin, the capital of the central state Kwara   have expressed surprise at the victory of Mr Donald Trump at the Nov 8 Presidential elections in the United States.

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara, Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday that he was surprised that Trump triumphed over Mrs Hillary Clinton at the polls.

He said he never thought that Trump could defeat Clinton as he considered the Real Estate Mogul uncultured in his pronouncements.

According to Oyedepo, going by the media hypes, he was confident that Hillary Clinton would defeat Trump, but he was wrong.

Oyedepo declared that Trump’s victory has made him to realise that US politics was not about personalities, but issue based.

“With the big shots behind Clinton, both past US presidents and the incumbent Barrack Obama, I thought that Hillary will win convincingly.”

Oyedepo said he was sure that the people of America voted for Trump because of his promise to create jobs for the America people as well as restoring American values.

He described the Presidential election and Trump’s victory as a phenomenon to study, adding that Americans have voted according to their conscience.

State Secretary of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Abayomi Afolabi also expressed his surprise at the outcome of the US Presidential election.

Afolabi described Trump as white extremist who did not hide his hatred for the black race.

“America people have voted, if that is what they want, then good luck to the Americans.

“I know that black man, especially Nigerians will have it hard under Trump’s presidency.”

The union leader therefore advised black people to be prepared and fasten their belts for the hard times that lay ahead. (NAN)
