Irate youths around Zango Road, Tudun Wada community in Kaduna South Local Government of Kaduna State in North-West Nigeria, have allegedly killed four members of the Shiite sect, burnt down the residence of the Kaduna leader and demolished their Islamic school in the area.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, after a clampdown by combined Nigerian security forces that prevented the Shiite members from their procession planned to take place since Tuesday.
Bashir Sani, a resident of the area, said the irate youths broke into the Shiite leader’s house and carted away valuables before setting the house ablaze.
Some of the Shiite leaders who spoke to our reporter on phone said: “It’s the police that ordered the youths to attack us and to destroy our buildings.”
The Shiite members confirmed that Mukhtar Sahabi, leader of the sect in Kaduna and owner of the burnt house at Zango Road, was killed during the Zaria army clampdown of December 2015.
Mallam Bala, a shop owner at Zango Road, while narrating the incident said irate youths prevented the Shiite members from penetrating communities after being dispersed by police tear gas.
“They were not in their traditional black dress, while being dispersed with police tear gas, but were being identified by vigilant youths who engaged them in a fight. Those who resisted were killed. The house of their leader Mukhtar was burnt down and their Markas (school) is currently being demolished by youths,” he said.
He said fire service have put off the raging fire at Mukhtar’s house, while the police are currently undertaking a patrol around the area.
“The situation is under control,” a police source has confirmed to our reporter.
Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer Aliyu Muhammad proved abortive and calls and text messages were not responded to.
