Operatives of the Lagos State Task Force have arrested four private vehicle drivers and impounded 17 motorcycles for driving against traffic.
Speaking Wednesday on the operation, the Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, said the enforcement operation was carried out in view of the need to ensure that motorists comply with the Lagos Traffic Law as well as the series of complaints from residents in Iyana-Ipaja, Pen Cinema, Airport Road, Ile-Zik and Fagba in Lagos.
He explained that the force is daily inundated with complaints of motorists and cyclists driving against the traffic, especially at peak hours, resulting in avoidable accidents and loss of lives in the aforementioned areas.
On his part, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, has directed that drivers of those vehicles and riders of impounded motorcycles apprehended should be immediately charged to court for various traffic offences as contained in the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws of 2012.
He however said if those arrested forfeited their vehicles to the government in accordance with the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws of 2012, others who intend to commit same traffic offence would have a re-think.
Mr. Owoseni maintained that every section of the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws of 2012 must be obeyed by all road users across the state.
He noted that it has been statistically revealed that private vehicle drivers including motorcycle and tricycle operators were those committing more of traffic offences than any other road users in Lagos.
