Nigeria striker Kelechi Iheanacho early Saturday afternoon scored the winning goal as Manchester City defeated hosts Manchester United in the season’s first Manchester derby.
The Nigerian youngster struck from close range in the 36th minute to extend the visitors’ lead after De Bruyne had put them in the driver’s seat earlier in the thrilling clash at Old Trafford.
Old war horse Zlatan Ibrahimovic pulled one back for the Reds in the 42nd minute. All efforts by Jose Mourinho’s men, including world’s most expensive player Paul Pogba, to even scores proved abortive as City gallantly defended their lead till the final whistle.
Speaking with reporters after the crunchy tie, Iheanacho, who replaced the suspended Sergio Aguero, who started a three-match ban with the game, said it was a dream come true to start for Manchester City against Manchester United.
He simply echoed his pre-match sentiments: “It’s a dream come true. The manager (Pep Guardiola) gives me a lot of confidence.”
Iheanacho had also said: “It will be a great feeling to score in the Manchester Derby, let’s wait and see.”
Last season, Iheanacho, 19, fired eight goals in 26 appearances in the Premier League.
