Pope Benedict XVI has said it was his duty to step down from the papacy three years ago because he could no longer cope with the global travel that goes with the job.
Benedict used an interview published on Wednesday in The Times of London to say that he realised he was no longer physically up to the job after gruelling trips to Mexico and Cuba in 2012.
The World Youth Day gathering had been scheduled for the summer of 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, “but the trip threatened to be too physically demanding for the frail Pope, who would have celebrated his 86th birthday,” The Times reported.
