The small town of Ezinifite in Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, witnessed a double tragedy this weekend, with a man identified as a police officer, and his lover, a member of staff of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), being found dead after an apparent night of sex.
The name of the police officer, who News Express gathered was an Inspector and a father of three, could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report. The name of the deceased lover was given as Ifeoma Okeke, a mother of five.
The two were found dead in the third floor apartment of the police officer.
According to neighbours, the family of the deceased police officer lives in Lagos, while that of the lover lives in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
It was gathered that Ifeoma had told her husband that she was attending a church vigil but ended up in her lover’s house, nearby.
A neighbour narrated the story thus: “The woman spent the night with her police lover, but both did not wake up until a labourer, who was to work for the deceased police man, came in the morning and discovered their dead bodies.
“Upon discovering of the dead bodies, the labourer rushed out and alerted neighbours. The neighbours followed the labourer to the apartment and confirmed the incident before a relative intervened and locked up the compound to prevent the large number of people trooping into the area from further going inside the apartment.”
Some of the neighbours who were seen in circles discussing the incident said that the generating set belonging to the late police officer was on most of the night of the incident, thus lending heavy credence to the suspicion that fumes from the generating set might be the cause of their death.
One of the neighbors said: “I was hearing the sound of the generator, but at about 4am, I stopped hearing the sound and that may be when the fuel finished. I was surprised when we were told that two people died in the flat.”
He noted that the late police officer hardly stayed around saying that the sound of the generating set was what usually made people to know whenever he was around, as the generating set would run throughout the night.
Feelers also have it that the building were the police officer was living belonged to the younger brother of the deceased police officer.
When Security operatives, comprising local vigilantes, the police and men of the NSCDC, later arrived at the scene of the incident, they dispersed everybody before evacuating the copses of the victims in an ambulance to an undisclosed hospital.
However, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Office, Mrs. Nkeiru Nwode, said that though she is yet to be briefed on the incident, that the man in question was not a member of the Nigeria Police Force, adding that the woman’s identity is yet to be ascertained.
