Nigeria’s 12-year-old genius set to display talent in America

Nigeria’s 12-year-old wonder kid, Ruth Ejims, from Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, is set for Washington DC in the United States next month to participate in the final of the Spelling Bee. Ejims will square up with other global geniuses in a spelling competition.

The Spelling Bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a collection of difficult words.

The spelling competition is being organised under the Young Educators Foundation.

The Young Educators Foundation is an NGO that is dedicated to promotion of literacy and education across the continent’s children

“We have a couple of programmes that include the Young Debaters Society which is an offshoot of the international public speaking competition in Washington DC and spelling Bee competition,” Akin Olu-Phillips, Programmes Director at Young Educators Foundation.

“Young Debaters encourages young people between the ages of 18 and 25 to participate and the winner goes to the Washington to participate,” he added.

He said the organisation was running the public speaking competition out of Ghana.

Ejims, a student at Shaloms College has emerged as the 2016 Spelling Bee Champion said she was honoured to have outdone her peers.

“I feel so joyful, elated, happy and honoured. It came as a surprise as I didn’t expect it, being the best among my equals,” she said.

Ejims’ effort that might see her emerge as the global spelling champion in Washington, DC. International Public Speaking Competition will take place between May 9th and 13th 2016.

“I am preparing very hard and immensely to join other competitors in Washington.”

The competition reaches over 40,000 young people in 50 countries across the globe.
