Execution of condemned prisoners “a sad day for human rights in Nigeria” —Australia

VIENNA, Austria, June 26, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ “I am shocked about the most recent executions in Nigeria which are a set-back for the implementation and the protection of human rights in the country,” Austrian Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Spindelegger said commenting on the four executions yesterday in the southern province of Edo.

“With these executions, Nigeria is putting an end to the moratorium that has been in force since 2006 and that was a model and hope for all opponents of capital punishment and human rights activists in the region,” the Vice-Chancellor continued. Some 1,000 people are currently on death row in Nigerian prisons.

“The European Union and Austria reject the death penalty for all crimes and under all circumstances; it is an inhumane punishment that disregards human dignity.” 682 executions were performed worldwide in 2012. There is a general trend towards abolition of capital punishment.

“We deeply regret this set-back in the respect of human rights and call upon Nigeria and all other states that still impose capital punishment to stop executions and to make every effort to legally abolish the death penalty,” the Foreign Minister concluded.
