Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), Prof. Eleazar Uche Ikonne, has announced the creation of a Directorate of Quality Assurance and Ethics charged with the responsibility of policing all areas of service delivery to students.

Prof. Ikonne disclosed this during his maiden media briefing since assuming office last December. He also said that the university is developing and improving on its website to enable students register their courses and check their results online of which the Faculty of Science and Humanities is being used as the pilot project.

The Vice Chancellor said during the briefing held in ABSU’s Conference room: “Building on the peaceful environment and welfarist administration which we inherited, we have put some agencies in place, including the Directorate of Quality assurance and Ethics which is charged with policing all areas of service delivery to students -from teaching to examination, to grading of scripts to releasing of results.

“We want to know what is happening in each of these stages because even before now, we had Senate deadline for releasing and submission of results which the past administration has been running for the past five years.”

Prof. Ikonne said his administration inherited a task force which ensures that different deadlines aimed at achieving efficient service delivery were met, assuring that the task force would be empowered to discharge its functions.

He said: “We are improving on our ICT service delivery to students. Students are now to register their courses electronically and because of that, we have a Mark Sheet that is electronically prepared and as each student registers, his or her name enters into the Mark Sheet and only those whose names are on the Mark Sheet will have their results.

“This means that students can go to the university’s website and check their results. We are developing and populating our website so that if you visit our website, you will see activities – our calendar, researches, among others.

“We are here to improve on our research activities and we have a Committee on Research so that we will be able to harness donor agencies that come for researches, both national and international.”

Ikonne said his mission was to improve the national and international ranking of ABSU.
