Six pupils of the Police Children’s School, Umuahia, have been awarded scholarships to pursue their education up to university level, courtesy of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase.

The pupils were selected through a competitive examination and interviews conducted in all Police Command Schools nationwide.

At the presentation of the scholarship awards to the beneficiaries yesterday at the Police Officers Mess, Umuahia, Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr Joshak Habila, explained that IGP Arase instituted the scholarship scheme to boost education among children of policemen, especially those whose parents died in active service.

The gesture, he stressed, was to ensure that education of the beneficiaries was not hampered.

He described the IGP’s scholarship scheme as novel, adding that it demonstrates his desire for a better Nigeria.

“This is a major landmark in the running of the Police Force in Nigeria,” Habila said. “Education is the bedrock of development of any society.”

Habila maintained that if Nigerian children are exposed to sound education, the country would be a world power in future.

He commended the beneficiaries for excelling in the selection process and enjoined Police Officers to ensure that they provide good education for their children so that they would be responsible members of society.

Headteacher of Police Children’s School, Umuahia, Donny Akparanta, in his remarks, appreciated IGP Arase for promoting education and appealed to policemen to patronise the school by sending their children and wards there.

Inspector Alfred Monday, speaking on behalf of parents of the beneficiaries, also lauded IGP Arase for introducing the scholarship scheme which would help indigent pupils to access quality education.

The beneficiaries are Stephen Onyedikachukwu (Primary 1), Onyeabo Emmanuel Chimaobi (Primary 1), Apeh Destiny (Primary 2), Gift Alfred Monday (Primary3), Egede Florence (Primary 4) and Onyedika Joy Chinwendu (Primary 5).
