Hitches mar Bayelsa governorship election

Despite loud boasts by both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the various security agencies, the ongoing governorship election in Bayelsa State has been marred by violence and delays.

Accreditation of voters was delayed as materials did not commence on time even in the state capital, Yenagoa LGA. The story was the same in various units visited by News Express, namely, Unit 16 Ovom and units 8, 9 and 14 – all in Ward 1, Yenagoa.

Violence recorded in places such as Ekeremor, Nembe and Brass LGAs, where political thugs had a field day before they were overpowerd by a combined team of security operatives.

As earlier reported by News Express, thugs opened fire to disrupt the distribution of election materials in Oporoma, headquarters of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, while guns were also booming in Brass and Nembe Bassambri, with the police and the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) battling to contain the situation.

The Bayelsa State Police Commissioner, Mr. Nasiru Oki, confirmed that arrests have been made and the situation brought under control.

The election is a straight fight between incumbent governor Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his predecessor cum main rival, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
