FIFA Exec C’ttee suggests 12 years for president

The FIFA Executive Committee on Thursday in Zurich approved a reform package with new leadership structures limiting the president and members of a newly formed council to 12 years in office.

An executive committee member said on condition of anonymity that it was waiting the approval from a FIFA congress on February 26, 2016.

He said the committee did not reach a decision on an expansion of the World Cup field from 32 to 40 teams.

The source said council replaced the executive committee, to consist of a 36 members and to serve as a supervisory board of FIFA without any executive powers.

“Instead, the general secretary said nine of 26 committees will gain in importance and will make most management decisions.

“In addition, the payments of top officials will be published each year while the executive committee rejected an age limit of 74 for officials.”

Meanwhile, German FIFA Executive, Wolfgang Niersbach said that a decision on the expansion of the World Cup field from 2026 has not been taken.

“You could see that especially representatives from Asia and Africa were in favour of it.

“The issue has been handed over to administration for further examination.”

Several officials had lately called for more teams at showcase tournament, including UEFA general secretary and FIFA presidential candidate Gianni Infantino. (dpa/NAN)
