The Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis, and the Catholic leadership in Nigeria have damned Catholics in Ahiara Mbaise in Imo State, South-East Nigeria, by going ahead to inaugurate Monsignor Peter Okpaleke as the new Bishop of Ahiara Diocese.

Information reaching News Express has it that Okpaleke’s consecration is currently ongoing at the Seat of Wisdom Major Seminary, Owerri, Imo State capital.

As reported this morning by News Express, the event was originally planned to hold in Ahiara but had the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), in agreement with the Vatican through the papal envoy in Nigeria, the Uganda-born Archbishop Ussiju, decided to move it to Owerri following threat of violence by those opposed to Okpaleke’s appointment.

Monsignor Okpaleke was chosen last December 7 by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI to replace the late Bishop Victor Chikwe but was rejected by the diocese because he is not from Mbaise but from neighbouring Anambra State. All efforts by the Catholic Church now under Pope Francis to convince the Diocese to accept Okpaleke felon deaf ears. The Vatican is expected to sanction Ahiara Diocese for the rebellion.
