The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase, has pledged to improve the welfare of policemen to enhance their performance.

Arase made the pledge in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday during his nationwide tour of police commands across the country.

He said that efforts would be intensified to ensure that crime rate remained low.

The IGP warned police officers and men against corruption and misuse of fire arms.

“You should also respect the human rights of people and engage non-state actors on security issues as they are veritable source of information.”

Arase stated that the police, in conjunction with the United Nations Habitat unit, would ensure that policemen benefited from the proposed 25,000 housing programme.

“This is part of long term plans to provide housing for men and officers of the force so that they will have a place to live in before and after retirement.

“We are also committed to the welfare of the children of our officers and men as a scholarship scheme would be provided for children of policemen to cushion the effect of hardship and brighten their future.”

He charged policemen to rededicate themselves to their duties by shunning corruption and called on citizens to be security-conscious by reporting suspicious movements to police.

The Commissioner of Police in Kebbi, Yakubu Jibril, assured Arase that the command would ensure that crime rate remained low in the state.

He pledged to sustain and improve on the existing peace in the state. (NAN)
