Kano state government has approved N100 million loan for disbursement to 5,000 wheat farmers in the state.
Alhaji Faruk Rabi’u, chairman, Wheat Farmers Association in the state, made the disclosure on Sunday in Kano in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said that the facility was intended to encourage the farmers boost wheat production.
He said that the farmers were expected to pay back the loan after selling the commodity, adding that many companies had indicated interest to purchase the commodity from the farmers.
“It has been agreed that the farmers will pay back the loan after harvesting and selling the produce.
“No fewer than 5,000 wheat farmers will benefit from the facility which will soon be disbursed to them.”
Rabi’u said that there were about 37 irrigation clusters across the 44 local government areas of the state.
He commended the state government for supporting the farmers and urged the selected farmers to make judicious use of the facility to improve their socio-economic status.
“Some of the wheat farmers had abandoned the business due to lack of ready market.
“But with this facility and the promise made by some companies to buy the commodity, many will return to the business.”
NAN recalls that the state executive council had, last week, approved N1 billion loan for disbursement to rice farmers in the state as part of efforts to boost food production. (NAN)
