Nigeria’s power problems will soon be a thing of the past, a member of the National Executive Council Committee on Reinvesting Plan for Power Sector has said.

Mr. Peter Obi, who is also Governor of Anambra State, made the disclosure yesterday after the the Committee’s meeting at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, to review its reports.

Speaking with newsmen after the meeting, Obi stressed that both the federal and state governments were committed to resolving the problem of power in the country.

“In view of how serious the President as well as the governors take the matter, I assure you that power problem will soon become a thing of the past,” he stated.

He also disclosed that the Committee would submit its report to Vice President Namadi Sambo today in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

Obi had at first declined to talk to the press, insisting that it was the Chairman of the Committee, Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State, who should address the press if need be. However, when pressed harder Obi said that the Committee was set up as part of efforts by the Goodluck Jonathan administration to find lasting solutions to the power problem in the country.

On snippets from the report, Obi said: “I am not the Chairman of the Committee. It is only the Chairman that can do that. In any case, the report will be presented tomorrow (today). Why not wait and the entire report will be made available to the press?”

News Express recalls that the Committee was set up by the National Executive Council to review the technical report on the power sector and to recommend best ways for investment in the sector.

Apart from Imoke and Obi, other members of the Committee such as the governors Idris Wada of Kogi and Ibrahim Shema of Katsina; Minister of National Planning, Dr, Shansuddeen Usman; Chief Executive of Transmission Company of Nigeria, Don Priestman; Principal Consultant, Energy Sector Practice, Dr. Cezley Sampson; and MD of Niger Delta Power Holding, J. A Olutu, present at the meeting.
