The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Friday pledged to work closely with the state government to provide permanent solution to the meance of flooding in the state.
Chairman of the assembly's Committee on Relief and Disaster Management, Alhaji Abdullahi Zakari gave the pledge while assessing the level of damage caused by flood at Kutufare village of Gudu Local Government.
“The state assembly is fully aware of the problem and we are generally committed to seeing that all necessary measures are put in place in order to stop the reoccurrence of such disasters.
“The Assembly is fully committed to support in any circumstances to ensure that the people of the state are not suffering from any form of disaster.”
Zakari, who sympathised with the victims, urged them to be patient as government takes steps to alleviate their suffering.
Also, the Chairman House committee on Appropriation, Alhaji Garba Bello promised that the members would push for the reconstruction of the road leading to the area before 2016.
Alhaji Yusuf Goronyo, Director Personnel Management of the local government said efforts were on to provide ‘an emergency access road’ to the community, which had been cut off by the flood.
Speaking earlier, the Village Head of Kutufare, Alhaji Magaji Altine said that the village has been experiencing such disaster for the past six years.
“This year's disaster is worse with 300 farmlands affected.
“I am appealing to the state government to come to our aid, my people are now living without shelter and almost all their farm produce had been destroyed by the flood.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the visit by the assembly committee followed a motion adopted by the House on Tuesday Sept. 8, urging the state government to provide urgent aid to the victims. (NAN)
