UN agencies pledge to assist Gombe overcome its challenges

The seven United Nations (UN) agencies on Monday promised to support Gombe State in addressing its challenges to enable it move forward.

Madam Ratidzai Ndhlovu, United Nations Funds for Population Activities

(UNFPA) Resident Representative in Nigeria made the pledge on behalf of other agencies during a meeting of the agencies in Gombe.

“I wish to reiterate the commitment of the seven UN agencies, UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR, UNDP, IOM and OCHA to support Gombe in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the state.”

According to her, the UN agencies will facilitate effective growth and empowerment of all citizens, by ensuring that the state reaped from areas it had comparative advantage.

Ndhlovu explained that if this investment was done and timed well in the state, highly productive jobs would be created, boosting income at individual and family levels.

In his remarks at the occasion, Gov. Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe commended the UN agencies for working towards the development of the state and the country at large.

“As we partner in our drive to improve the quality of lives of the people of Gombe state, I would like to assure the commitment of the government towards improving the quality of lives of the people of Gombe.

“Within available resources, we shall meet our human and financial obligations.”

In his welcome address, Alhaji Aliyu Bappah, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Economic Planning, Gombe state, said that over the years development partners had been of tremendous assistance to the state.

“The occasion we are witnessing today is remarkable; the UN has accepted to operate and collaborate with Gombe state government as one body.”  (NAN)
