The Association of Orphanages and Homes Operators in Nigeria (ASOHON) on Saturday said that it is ready to help combat the emerging menace of illegal orphanages and homes in Nigeria.

This is contained in a press release signed by the National President of the association, Mrs. Dele George, and the General Secretary, Dr. Gabriel Oyedeji.

ASOHON is the umbrella body of orphanages and homes in the country.

According to George, the emergence of illegal orphanages and homes has led to the disturbing operations of baby factories in the country which is not a healthy development for the country.

The statement said that the association had also concluded plans to hold a national conference to arrest the crime head on.

George, also the founder of Little Saints Orphanage, Lagos said: “The purpose of the conference is to bring together all operators of orphanages in Nigeria.

“The seminar will be on how to improve social interventions services in the country.

“It will also be a forum for the harmonisation in operations of homes and orphanages with a view to abating incidences of malpractices inherent in the sector.

“Our goal is to chart a course for our industry and brainstorm on actionable solutions to problems confronting the association and Nigerian orphans.

“We hope to bring orphanages across the country together to network and exchange information and ideas that will provide a way forward to the many challenges that abound.”

As for Oyedeji, he had this to say: “We want to share our experience with other orphanage and home operators across the country.

“The idea is that after the conference, members will go back to their respective states and rally other orphanages in their state to form a united chapter in their states.

“It is crucial that the illegal operations of some orphanages and homes be nipped in the bud now.” (NAN)
