Founder of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Biafra Independence Movement and (BIM), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has made a strong case for the recognition of Biafra as an independent nation, telling the United Nations that it is the only solution to the problems confronting Biafrans.

“The only solution to our problem is the recognition of Biafra as a Sovereign nation just as it is done by all other nations of the world,” Uwazuruike said during the address on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

He traced the woes of Igbos and their South-South neighbours that composed the short-lived Biafra Republic to the civil war of 1967 to 1970.

“Since 1970, the Biafrans were excluded from the scheme of things in Nigeria,” Uwazuruike said.

“Because of that exclusion and humiliation and marginalisation, we started through non-violence the process of actualizing Biafra again in 1999. Since then the agitators have suffered many casualties, so many of our people have been killed. Up till today, we don’t sleep in our houses because of the fact that we are being pursued by the military, by the Fulani herdsmen who occupy our farms. The history is there for the world to know, it is not a new thing,” the BIM-MASSOB Leader said.

Noting that the United Nations has over the years granted recognition to several new nations, Uwazuruike said: “During Olympic Games and during World Cup, we see a variety of countries, big countries, big nations being recognised by the United Nations. These nations are from Europe and America.” He concluded by asking the world governing body to be fair to the people of Biafra by also granting them recognition as an independent people.
