The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) yesterday lamented the increasing number of orphans generated by Boko Haram activities in North-West Nigeria.

The Vice President Zone A, NAWOJ, Hajiya Zainab Shuaibu Rabo Ringim, made the lamentation at the inauguration ceremony of its newly elected executives of Kaduna chapter.

“As women we owe the nation a duty to nurse the future for prosperity, in fact, the ever increase in the number of orphans on the streets of North-West, especially those whose parents were killed by Boko Haram in the North-East is quite alarming and unacceptable,” she said.

She called on state governors to upgrade or establish orphanage homes(where there is non) in at least each senatorial zone of their states to rehabilitate and take care of the children whose parents were killed by Boko Haram.

Ringim also called on journalists to abide by the ethics of the profession and be mindful of politics and politicking because, according to her, “we are the search light of a true democracy.”

“NAWOJ also wish to call on state governors in the North West to consider the appointment of women journalists as commissioners of information and Press Secretaries into their cabinet which were considered most challenging for women in the past,” the NAWOJ VP added.

Those who emerged victorious in the NAWOJ Kaduna chapter election are: Juliet Oyoyo (Daily Independent) Chairperson, Fatima Aliyu (FRCN) Vice Chairperson, Sahura Jibrin Maidoki (KSMC) Secretary, Hauwa Mohammed (State Information) Assistant Secretary, Kate Affiong (State Information) Treasurer, Beatrice Sani (KSMC) Financial Secretary, and Amina Anebi (CORE TV) as Auditor.

While congratulating the newly elected executives, the VP described the occasion as the first of its kind in her assignment as the VP of the North West in Kaduna State and called on them to abide by the ethics of the profession and the NUJ constitution.
