Hon. Martins Azubuike representing Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency was late this morning unanimously elected the Speaker of the 6th Abia State House of Assembly.

Shortly after the Proclamation of the House by the Clerk/Permanent Secretary, Mr Johnpedro Irokansi, the newly inaugurated lawmakers swung into action to elect principal officers.

Tony Mezie Nwubani (Ukwa West State Constituency) nominated Azubuike for the position of Speaker. He was supported by Emeka Alozie (Osisioma North State Constituency). Since there was no further nomination, the Clerk pronounced that Azubuike has been elected Speaker of the new House unopposed.

Cosmas Ndukwe of PDP representing Bende North was elected Deputy Speaker, beating Ikedi Ezekwesiri of APGA representing Umunneochi State Constituency with 13 votes to 9. Two votes were declared invalid. PDP has 13 members in the House while APGA has 11.
