The beneficiaries of Water and Sanitation and Hygiene intervention by the Victims Support Fund (VSF) in three selected secondary schools in Bayelsa, Thursday applauded the gesture.

The VSF task-force on COVID-19 donated three solar-powered boreholes, worth N55 million to the schools drawn from three senatorial districts in Bayelsa.

They are Community Secondary School, Otuoke-Otuabagi in Ogbia Local Government Area, Community Secondary School Sagbama in Sagbama LGA, and Kaima Grammar School, Kolokumo/Opokuma LGA.

Mrs. Grace Dafese, Principal Community Secondary School, Otuoke-Otuabagi, said that the intervention would enhance the compliance to COVID-19 protocols across the schools.

Dafese who spoke on behalf of the other principals said the intervention by VSF was an encouragement to staff and students to continue to learn in an atmosphere that encouraged safety.

According to her, the availability of running water was fundamental to practicing the COVID-19 protocol for hand washing.

She noted that the solar powered water facilities were suitable for schools due to its low operational and maintenance costs as it would not require fueling.

She said that other items given to each of the benefiting schools included: 15 pieces of four-litre hand sanitiser, 360 bottles of 500ml liquid hand wash, 2,000 pieces of re-usable face masks and 15 cartons of bleach.

On the part of the students, Success Okpor, a Senior Secondary student, said the provision of four handwashing spots would enhance the culture of personal hygiene among students.

Okpor, Senior Prefect of the school said that the re-usable masks would serve as spare when they wash the ones they previously had as the school was very strict on the enforcement of the COVID-19 safety protocols.
