Sir Alex Ferguson and his assistant Mike Phelan were among the spectators last night as Real Madrid mercilessly crushed Spanish archrivals Barcelona 3-1 in the semi-final second leg of the Copa del Rey.

Their mission: To spy on Real Madrid ahead of the European Champions League return at Old Trafford next Tuesday, March 5.

In the first leg played February 13 at the Santiago Bernabeu, Cristiano Ronaldo had rescued the homers with a spectacular header that left the final scores at 1-1.

Danny Welbeck had given United the lead against the run of play with a header from a 20th-minute corner, but Ronaldo even scores when he rose high to meet Angel di Maria’s swinging cross 10 minutes later for his 183rd goal for Madrid — and first against his former club.
