The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been described as the only democratic party in Imo State.
The declaration was made by Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi (Imo East senatorial zone) while speaking at the state congress of the party on Saturday in Owerri. He also commended members of the party for successfully conducting their 2020 state congress where renowned industrialist, Engr. Charles Ugwu, emerged as the state chairman of the party.
The 2020 congress of the party in the state, which had Onyewuchi as chairman of the organizing committee witnessed the emergence of 38 members of the party being elected into various positions, with some members of the immediate past State Working Committee (SWC) being re-elected.
Among the re-elected members were Sir Martin Ejiogu, State Deputy Chairman; Hon. Nze Ray Emeana, State Secretary; Barr. Josiah Eze, State Treasurer; Mrs. Maria Mbakwe, State Women Leader; Nze Law Biaduo; and Chief Godson Nwaobasi, State Auditor.
Other members who joined the new SWC, after the elections, are Barr. Kissinger Ikeokwu, State Legal Adviser; Hon. Greg Nwadike, State Youth Leader; Barr. Bede Ojinmadu, State Financial Secretary; and Ogubundu Nwadike, State Publicity Secretary.
According to the state publicity secretary of the party, Ogubundu Nwadike, a total of 2,759 delegates from the 27 Local Government Areas of the state voted at the congress.
Engr. Ugwu commended officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and officers from PDP National Headquarters for observing the conduct of the congress.
The newly elected chairman of the party also thanked all party elders, leaders and members, particularly the delegates to the congress, for coming out to accord the congress desired status. He commended the immediate past executive of the party for taking good care of party. He congratulated all the winners that formed the new executive of the party in the state.
“Engr. Ugwu, on behalf of the new executive, pledged to manage Imo PDP very well to the satisfaction and appreciation of all party leaders and members, and ultimately, Imo people and Imo State. He called for support from all party leaders and members to collectively take the party to greater heights and reclaim power in the state,” Nwadike said in a statement.
Also present at the Kanu Nwankwo Sports Complex, Owerri, the Voting Centre for the congress were top party leaders including His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha; and his deputy, Hon. Engr. Gerald Irona; Rt. Hon. Chuma Nnaji and his deputy; Chief Chukwuma Ekomaru SAN, and Dr. Vin Udokwu others.
Other notable party leaders that graced the Congress were serving national legislators, including Rt. Hon. Henry Nwawuba, (Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives); Rt. Hon. Bede Eke, (Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency); Hon. Engr. Ikenna Elezianya, (Owerri Federal Constituency); Hon. Emeka Chinedu, (Ahiazu-Ezinihitte Federal Constituency).
PDP members of the Imo State House of Assembly were also in attendance. They included Hon. Anyadike Nwosu, Minority Leader, representing Ahiazu State Constituency; Rt. Hon. Okey Onyekanma, immediate past Deputy Speaker, representing Mbaitoli; Hon. Solomon Anukam, representing Owerri Municipal; Hon. Philip Ejiogu, representing Owerri North.
