His selling out Wembley SSE Arena in London on Saturday, November 2, 2019 was only the most recent of successes recorded by the self acclaimed African Giant, Burna Boy.

After performing at the 02 Arena for Wizkid’s Starboy Fest, Burna made history by becoming the first African to sell out the 12,000 capacity Wembley SSE Arena.

Since late last year, the Afrobeat artiste has been making boss moves and putting out worthy projects into the market.

In less than a year, Damini Ogulu (real name) has transcended from being a regular, B-list artiste into being at the forefront of not just Nigerian music, but the entire African sound. This transformation, many believe, is too rapid to be ordinary.

Burna Boy won the Headies’ Arstiste of the Year in October, MTV Base’s African Act of the Year in November and the 2019 African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA)’s Artiste of the Year award also in November. This year seems to be his best yet.

But what’s the secret behind all of these achievements? What does he do differently? How come his growth is this rapid? What is the charm he is using? What is his magic wand?

The charm, no doubt, is in the fact that lately, his songs have been portraying the true culture of ‘Africanism’ in the sense that Burna Boy has been preaching African unity in his songs. In his sit-down with The Fader, he said:

“I can guarantee you that at least 90% of my people that are my age group in Nigeria —who are considered the youth — had no clue about Nigeria, the real origins of Nigeria. There's so much knowledge, there's so much truth that needs to be told. There's so much that needs to... there's so much that the youth needs to know in order to be — how do I explain it in order to be almost respected? (Because) really and truly right now, the only thing that can save the youth is knowledge and financial independence.”

This charm has definitely given Damini the turn around every artiste wishes for in his or her career. It definitely is something to tap into.

Music lovers now seek a message beyond good rhythm and beats. The hack is to preach, and about the very matters that affect us as human beings the most.
