As part of measures to sanitise the transport sector, the Abia State Government is set to abolish all illegal motor parks across state just as it has issued an ultimatum to all motor mechanics to relocate to the mechanic village at Ohiya on the outskirts of the Umuahia, the state capital.

While all operators of illegal motor parks have till this weekend to move into approved parks, mechanics have up till the end of next month to relocate to Ohiya mechanic village in Umuahia South Local Government Area.

By Transport & Business Express reports that the operation of illegal motor parks has resulted in traffic congestion in Umuahia while mushrooming mechanic workshops are defacing the state capital. Previous efforts to close down illegal motor parks in the state capital had failed.

Already, Commissioner for Transport, Chief Ukpai Agwu Ukpai, has commenced visiting major motor parks in the state just as the General Manager of the state-run transport  company, Abia Line Network , Ugochukwu Uwaeke, is currently on sensitisation visits to motor parks to ensure that government deadline for movement to the mechanic village is realised.

Ukpai who has visited major motor parks in Aba reiterated government’s decision to clamp down on unauthorised motor parks in the state when the seven-day ultimatum for their closure expires this weekend.

Responding on behalf of the motor unions, Chief Chidi Ozurumba commended the commissioner for his efforts at sanitising the transport sector and promised him of their support to achieve desired goals.

Speaking at a similar forum in Umuahia, the state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Chief Sunny Nwakodo, said the union was not happy with some drivers who were not adhering to the state government’s order and pledged to join hands with the Abia Line Network task force to ensure that the state government’s policy is implemented.

Meanwhile, the management of Abia line Network Company has constituted a task force headed by the chief driver of the company to ensure that the state government’s policy of relocating all motor mechanics from Umuahia metropolis to Ohiya Mechanic Village is realised.
