The two months-old strike embarked upon by Akwa Ibom State local government employees has been suspended following the intervention by the state governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio.

The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) made this announcement yesterday after a joint meeting of the union executives with Gov. Akpabio in Uyo, where agreement was reached on the issues in dispute.

Consequently, all local government employees in the state have been directed to resume work immediately.

In a statement issued by the state NULGE Chairman, Comrade Martin Effiong, and Secretary, Comrade Mark Umanah, the union leadership expressed appreciation to Governor Akpabio for “his personal intervention in the dispute and the far-reaching agreement reached at the meeting.”

The statement assured workers of Ikot Ekpene, Ukanafun, Ikono, Abak and Urueoffong Oruko local government councils that the backlog of arrears of their salaries would “be paid promptly.”

News Express quotes the statement as assuring that “no worker in the local governments would be penalised for embarking on the strike action.”
