A husband who repeatedly raped his wife and filmed an assault on her mobile phone has been jailed.

The 26-year-old man, from Tower Hamlets, recorded footage of a sexual assault on his wife’s mobile phone and then gave it back to her in the mistaken belief she would be too frightened to speak out.

The violent husband also bound his wife’s hands with cable ties in separate rapes. He cannot be named because of the risk of his wife also being identified.

He was jailed at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday for 13 years for four offences of rape.

His victim, who remains anonymous, said after the sentencing: “I would encourage anyone in my position to come forward and tell the police or others. You will be supported. I hope to start to move on and rebuild my life.”

DS Jane Topping, from the Met’s sex offences unit, said she hoped the sentence would encourage other victims to come forward if they are being abused in a marriage.

“These crimes often go unreported and we applaud the bravery of the victim for speaking out. Such was her determination that the suspect had no choice but to plead guilty.”
