The Senate on Tuesday resolved to look into a statement made by former Minister of Defence, Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd.), calling on citizens to defend themselves against marauding herdsmen killing in parts of the country.

The resolution came as a result of an Order raised by a lawmaker representing Taraba Central, Senator Yusuf Yusuf, who came under order 42 narrating the incident which led to the statement.

According to Yusuf, during the convocation ceremony in Taraba State University on Saturday, Danjuma said: “(The) military is colluding with the militias and causing a lot of insecurity in this country and everyone should take arms and defend ourselves.”

The lawmaker then prayed that the motion be brought on another legislative day.

When put to a voice vote, there was a resounding “nay,” however, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, authoritatively declared: “The ayes have it.”
