RIWAMA adjusts Rivers refuse disposal hours, floats Special Task Force to arrest, prosecute defaulters

The Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has announced a little adjustment in its scheduled waste disposal hours for members of the public.

RIWAMA Sole Administrator, Bro. Felix Obuah, made the announcement shortly after an unscheduled monitoring of major roads and streets in Port Harcourt, the state capital, in the early hours of Tuesday, March 13, 2018 said the dumping time will now be from 6pm to12 midnight.

The RIWAMA Sole Administrator said the adjustment became necessary to accommodate traders and shop owners who close their shops by 6pm, to enable them dispose off their wastes before going home for the day.

Reassuring that the agency will not relent in its avowed commitment, as it is working round the clock to keep Port Harcourt and its environs clean and healthy; Bro. Obuah announced the setting up of a Special Task Force to arrest and prosecute anyone found dumping refuse at unauthorised places and outside the new refuse disposal hours of 6pm to 12 midnight.

At Rukpokwu-Aluu Road, SARS Road and surrounding roads and streets, and D/Line axis of Port Harcourt, the state capital, the Sole Administrator gave a marching order to the contractor in charge of the zone to ensure that the area is kept clean within seven hours.

He also advised Supervisors and Sanitation Monitoring Marshalls to ensure daily monitoring and report of all roads and streets within Port Harcourt, the State capital and its environs.

Bro. Obuah also urged Service Providers to sweep and keep all receptacles clean after daily evacuation.

He regretted that despite untiring efforts by the agency to promote and inculcate a clean and healthy culture in residents and those doing business in the State; some unpatriotic elements are still hell-bent on sabotaging the efforts of the agency through indiscriminate dumping of wastes at unapproved places and after the scheduled dumping hours.

Bro. Obuah called for a change of attitude as their cooperation would spur the agency to do more in its task of restoring Port Harcourt, the state capital, to its Garden City status.

While restating that cleanliness is next to godliness, the RIWAMA boss said Governor Nyesom Wike has invested huge resources to ensure the cleanliness of the State, urging residents to complement these efforts and abide by Sanitation laws to preserve the environment.
