It is no longer news that Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, wife of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, South-West Nigeria, was arrested in London with hard currency valued at N500 million.

What is news is that the amount so far laundered by the woman may run into several billions. This is because Mrs. Ajimobi, whose husband became governor only 17 months ago, is reported to have been on her 52nd trip to the UK in 17 months when the London Metropolitan Police arrested her upon finding her in possession of 400,000 pounds and thousands of US dollars the source of which she could not reasonably explain.

Assuming that the Oyo State First Lady had been laundering an average of N500 million on each trip, the amount would stand at N26 billion, according to calculations by News Express.

Governor Ajimobi has so far kept sealed lips over his wife’s arrest and reports that he personally flew to the UK to bail her wife.

News Express reports that Theresa Ibori, a former First Lady of a Nigerian state (Delta) and her husband, James, are currently serving jail terms in Britain over money laundering. It is unclear if Mrs. Ajimobi will be charged to court and what her fate would be if convicted.
