The Police in Anambra State says it has identified the gunman who massacred worshippers this morning at St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Garba Baba Umar, confirmed the attack, saying that only one gunman invaded the church. He said that the suspect has been identified but did not give further details.

Earlier reports spoke of about 20 to 50 worshippers being feared dead following the deadly invasion initially thought to have been carried out by more than one gunman.

“Unknown gunmen invaded the church while service was in progress spraying the innocent worshipers with bullets,” a source had told News Express.

He said that the shooting took place around 7:30 a.m.

Those injured in the attack are said to have been taken to Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi.
