A total of 43 public and 53 private schools have been carefully selected as code centres from the six education districts of Lagos, the Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, has disclosed. He added that State Public Libraries located at Herbert Macaulay, Ilupeju, Isolo and Ipaja would also be used for people that are out of school but interested in being part of the Code Lagos programme.

Speaking at an interactive session with stakeholders in his office, Bank-Olemoh revealed that there are many private organisations partnering with the State Government on the programme in order to ensure its success.

He said that the Master Trainers and Facilitators of the programme have already been trained and will soon be deployed to selected schools and public libraries to facilitate the Code Lagos project.

Bank-Olemoh explained that the initiative is an after school programme for students, while it has morning and evening sessions for those out of school, adding that upper primary class (Primary 4-6) would be regarded as the lower category while the higher category for the programming code will be for JSS 1- 3 and SS 1 - 3 students.

The Special Adviser said that each coding centre would have about 20 students per class with computer sets, inverter or solar energy and a facilitator.

He also called on the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretaries in the six education districts within the state to cooperate and ensure the successful implementation of the Code Lagos initiative in their various districts.

According to him, the Permanent Secretaries have major roles to play to ensure the project is successful, saying that “vision alone does not make a project work, but your commitment should ensure compliance and strict monitoring of the coding centres in your various educational districts.”

In her response, the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary District 1, Dr. Olufolayimika Ayandele, assured the Special Adviser of their commitment to make the programme a success and further enlighten school principals about the Code Lagos programme.
