The Kano State government yesterday sponsored the wedding of 1,520 couples under its of mass wedding programme.

The programme was first introduced in the state by the Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso administration when the incumbent governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was the deputy.

Speaking during the programme at the Kano Central Mosque, Emir’s Palace, Governor Ganduje said 3,000 couples were screened but 1,520 were selected for the first batch.

“Government will sponsor the wedding of the rest couples in the near future. We decided to make it in batches so that we will do everything diligently,” he assured.

Ganduje added that Kano state government paid N20, 000 for each bride and donated a set of room furniture and other materials to the couples.

Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi commended the Kano state government for sponsoring the mass wedding, and assured that the emirate council would continue to support any government programme that would help the people.

Speaking, the Commander General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, said the agreement entered between government and the grooms required that nobody would divorce his wife without the permission of the board.

He urged the couples to live in peace with one another, saying the essence of marriage is to live a better life and that could not be achieved without peace and harmony.

The state Commissioner for Local Government, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, said about N200m was spent for the mass wedding programme, saying unlike the previous exercises, this year’s mass wedding was spread across the 44 local government areas of the state. (Daily Trust)
