Kristalina Georgieva, Bulgaria’s European commissioner who lost out in the race to become United Nations secretary-general in September, was named yesterday as chief executive of the World Bank.

“The European Commission said that Ms Georgieva, 63, a vice-president at the EU executive responsible for the EU’s budget, will resign and take up her new post in January,” said a report today by The Times of London.

Ms Georgieva worked at the World Bank between 1993 and 2010, focusing on economics and sustainable development.
