The crisis rocking the Kaduna House of Assembly in Nigeria’s North-West deepened this morning with the new Speaker, Shehu Usman Tahir, appointing a new set of principal officers even as Muazu Usman Gangara, who was impeached yesterday, continues to insist that he remains Speaker.
Armed policemen have been drafted to secure Lugard Hall, the premises of the Assembly, for fear of a breakdown of law and order.
The 19 members loyal to the new Speaker defied yesterday’s pronouncement by Gangara that he is still in charge to arrive Lugard Hall at about 9:00 a.m., commence sitting at 10 and end 30 minutes later.
Umaru Yunusa (Lere East) was appointed the new Majority Leader and Philemon Gidanmanna from Makera Constituency as the new Chief Whip. Gidanmanna was the Speaker Pro-Tempo who presided over the nomination of the new Speaker.
Esther Habu representing Sanga Constituency is now the Deputy Majority Leader and Bala Yunus representing Tudun-Wada Constituency the new Minority leader. His deputy is Haliru Sambo while Yakubu Yusuf Soja was appointed is the Minority Whip.
