The Government of Anambra State has declared that it has no immediate plans to establish grazing reserves in the state. Commissioner for Information in the state, Chief Tony Nnacheta, made this known in Awka, the state capital on Wednesday, while briefing journalists on new appointments made by the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano.

The Commissioner said that the state was awaiting the Presidential Committee on Land Reforms where the state would then present its position paper on land matters adding that the state does not have enough land space for such task.

“We have no plans for grazing reserves. We are not thinking about such a thing now. We want to be proactive, but not preemptive of the presidential committee; but grazing reserve is not part of plans for now.  Any question on land, we are sensitive to it because land is scarce and dear to us,” the commissioner stated.

He said the state was mobilising stakeholders, including Local Government chairmen and traditional rulers for this purpose saying that the Deputy Governor of the state; Dr. Nkem Okeke, would head the Anambra State delegation on the Presidential committee on land reforms.

He gave the new appointments as Commissioner for Economic And Budget, Mr. Mark Okoye, Special Adviser on Efficiency, Mrs. Melie Onyejiepu, and Dr. Ifediora Amobi, Secretary Anambra State Investment Protection Agency (ANSIPA).

Nnacheta disclosed that the state executive council had in its meeting earlier within the week approved the construction of 12 roads and drainages at the Executive Business district of the state as part of the efforts to make Anambra a clean state adding that the state governor would lead sanitation exercises in the three senatorial districts of the state commencing from Anambra central district on Saturday, June, 2016.

The other two zones of Anambra North and South Senatorial districts would have their turns on 9th and 16th of July, respectively while markets and shops are expected to remain closed on those days till mid-day.

He said, “The governor will be leading the sanitation exercise so, everybody including teachers, students, traditional rulers, NGOs, churches, President Generals, traders, etc is expected to come out and help in cleaning our environment in order to improve the look of our environment.”

The commissioner also pointed out that the State Government is making available the sum N20 million for intervention projects in all the communities adding that the project will be chosen by each community through either the traditional ruler or the president general of the community.

According to the commissioner, the intervention project is expected to be completed by December, 2016.

While stressing that the Alex Ekwueme Square used for big government functions and political rallies will be upgraded with tents to protect people from rain, sun, toilet facilities and clean water, Nacheta said that the state government will be using the occasion of the 25th year anniversary of the state to honour some indigenes of the state who have contributed in various ways to the growth of the state since its creation.
