Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State in Nigeria’s South-East has come up with a suggestion which he believes could help cut the level of corruption in the country by half.

Opening an anti-corruption workshop in the state capital Awka, Obi said that the country’s corruption challenges could be halved if Nigerians could reduce the level of their greed.

Themed “Enhancing Economic Growth Through Anti-Corruption Measures”, the workshop was organised yesterday by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Addressing the workshop, Obi noted that evidence of greed and corruption in the country is glaring. He urged the accounting professionals and Nigerians at large to look closely at the community and ask the hard but necessary questions, rather than look for whistle blowers.

“We are all responsible for the high level of greed and corruption in our country,” the governor declared.

He, however, warned that “we have no other country and nowhere to go,” noting: “Other countries are not better, but have less greed and show more patriotism.” He warned that if nothing concrete is done about the situation, “the society we are abusing today will take a revenge on our children.”
