Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, yesterday canvassed the need for stakeholders’ support to strengthen the nation’s agriculture and production sectors.

The governor made the call during the official opening ceremony of the 2015 Delta Trade Expo.

He urged Deltans to begin to look beyond the agitation for employment in the oil sector and pay greater attention to the viability of agriculture.

Underscoring the import of agriculture in ensuring food security, economic development and job creation, particularly for the teeming youth population, Governor Uduaghan, who spoke through the Commissioner, Special Duties, Government House, Prof. Hope Eghagha said: “It has been the vision of the state government that more farmers in the state should continue to benefit from intervention programmes targeting agricultural development.”

The governor explained that as part of deliberate efforts by the State Government to address the economic challenges of the rural and urban poor persons in the state, his administration introduced the Delta State Micro-Credit Programme.

The programme, according to him, has, since inception in 2007, empowered over 111,312 entrepreneurs in the state, comprising over 67,861 females and over 43,451 males.

Earlier, the state Commissioner for commerce and Industry, Dr. Chris Ekiyor in his address of welcome had enjoined organized private sector, both small and medium industrialists to take advantage of the Trade Expo with the theme, ‘Trade Beyond Oil’ exchange business ideas that could take their businesses to the next level of development.
